The Variable Man Philip K Dick Alex Ebel 9781444471717 Books Reviews

Nice SF short story by Philip K. Dick. Worth a quick read.
I found this concept fascinating! My first read of this author and not disappointed.
This is an older collection containing, "The Variable Man," "Second Variety," "The Minority Report," "Autofac," and "A World of Talent." They are all outstanding stories Dick wrote during the 50s. "Second Variety," and "The Minority Report" have both been filmed as "Screamers" and "Minority Report."

"The Variable Man" is the longest story and noteworthy for being one of the first stories to feature a sort relativistic kill vehicle as a plot device. It takes place about 200 years in the future, when a semi-totalitarian Earth government is fighting a war with aliens from Proxima Centauri, who have blockaded the system, and are trying to perfect a bomb that will destroy the Proxima system by hitting that star a nearly the speed of light. They rely on computers to predict their chances of success in the war, but when they accidentally bring a man from the past forward in time his lack of predictability ruins the computer's calculations. Mayhem ensues.

"Second Variety" and "Autofac" are also prescient in their anticipation of the hazards of self-replicating machines. Both stories are about self-replicating and self-repairng machines used during a war (not the same one) that get dangerously out of control as the war reaches its end.

"The Minority Report" involves a future police system where psychics with precognition are used to prevent murders. It follows the adventures of the police commissioner when the system traps him for the murder of a man he's never heard of.

"A World of Talent" was written in reaction to the polyanna attitude many science fiction writers carried towards psychic powers, and shows the destructive effects they can have, particularily in the stratification of society.

If you're looking at a book to introduce you to PKD, or just want to read the stories those two movies were based on, this might be a good one to pick up. If you're a die-hard PKD fan though, most of these stories are reprinted in the recent five-volume series, "The Collected Stories of Philip K. Dick."
One of the giants of the science fiction world. It certainly shows in this story. Of course, it is so dated, but we can ignore the small details. The larger concepts shine here, and excite our imagination. What a wonderful story!

The formatting has one little quirk here. The story jumps from one scene (in one paragraph) to another scene (in the next paragraph) with no warning (no visible seperator). I'm used to seeing a line __________ or -------------------. Or ………… or ******** or <<<<< >>>>> or ~~~~~~~~. Something to indicate a scene change. That was not done here.

That is my only issue, the content of the story was quite absorbing.

(It was sure kinda fun to type all those symbols. Wheeeeee!)
Some things just don't compute with this story.
A classic science fiction story. With a great plot, simple language, fantastic story telling, this is a great SF story. Grabs you from the start and does not let go until the end. A must read.
Great story! PKD displays his talent for prescient thinking, couched in an entertaining short story. The Variable Man reads like a screenplay.
A brilliant bit of work, it's well worth a read.
Originally published in the late 1800's, the plot, characters and narrative of this book are uniques and still fresh. A creative mind was working hard when she put together the details of this mystery. It twists and turns all over the place and she switches the "voice" a couple of times, but it's all entertaining and holds the readers' interest. Will read more books by this author.

That Affair Next Door Anna Katharine Green 9781141941162 Books Reviews

As other reviews have pointed out, a remarkably nosy older woman, notices late night visitors to the empty mansion, next door to her own respectable home, in a posh neighborhood of NYC. It turns out there has been a murder. She determines that she has an obligation to aid the police in solving the crime. This is her story as told by her
As to the robot reading, it comes through quite well on this book, aside from the usual problems of words with multiple meanings, and, the inexplicable failure to correct pronunciation of titles, but rather spell them out ("M R S", "M, R","D, R" etc.)
Green does a good job of delineating the self-justifying egregious invasion of privacy and other civil rights by the heroine, while at the same time, through adept handling of the first person narrative, adding a humorous subtext of derision for these characteristics. To what extent, in our current society, we should continue to forgive in fiction what we so vigorously disdain in practice, or should disdain, is a matter for individual judgment. I am just about on the borderline of being unable to enjoy any book in which egotistical self-inflation is elevated to acceptable conduct the end justifying the means.
Since most readers are accustomed, through the brainwashing produced by contemporary fiction in book, film and television, to accept disrespect for the rights of others, I imagine my ruminations on the subject will be irrelevant to the enjoyment the average "cozy" reader can expect from Green's novel. Her heroine has substance, the plot interest, the puzzle adequate.
The scenes are all locations in Manhattan, none involve the complex organizational structures, which keep the Great City humming, but rather people in the homes and shops that mark the urban setting. The heroine also has her Inspector Piper, an old hand in the NYC police force, who somehow manages to accept her clear acts of Obstruction of Justice and general failure to cooperate with the organizational needs of law enforcement agencies.
Over-all, I would estimate that the average "cozy" reader will appreciate the virtues of the book and dismiss the unimportant vintage elements which speak of a somewhat older New York. A greater degree of pleasure will be enjoyed if one keeps in mind the role-playing expected of women a century ago.
This novel was copyrighted in 1897 and is very much a period piece. Miss Amelia Butterworth lives in a wealthy area of New York City and as is her habit, enjoys viewing happenings on her street from her bay window. What she views late one night starts the sleuthing Miss Butterworth on her adventure. The author Anna Katherine Green promotes female adventure and clearly has Amelia using her wiles to one-up the detective assigned to this case. There are various asides and thoughts that Miss Amelia has that are hilarious when she acknowledges her own superior brain power and abilities knowing the males around her vastly underestimate her skills. Miss Amelia is cognizant of how she is viewed by her neighbors- a nosy old maid but this bothers her not one bit. A good look into the female extreme-adventure novel of the day.The characters are well-drawn,particularly the elderly lead detective.
I like turn-of-the-century fiction and mysteries and I have been amassing a collection for over 25 years, originally in actual books, and now on my . I had looked at one of Anna Katharine Green's e-books some time ago, and didn't get it. I don't recall which one it was now-it may have been any of them. I had never heard of her. I finally decided to download "That Affair Next Door" just the other day when I was reading reviews of it and I am so glad that I did. It's a page-turner.

Miss Butterworth was the model for Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, and I can see why. Neither one misses much. Green is a master of the plot twist, just as Christie was. She keeps you guessing about "whodunnit" until near the end of the book.

I also liked her Detective Gryce. I did think at first that his age was a bit improbable, but I have at least one cousin, who is over 70 and still working, and we all know of other people in their 70's, or even older, who are still working, so it isn't that much of a stretch after all to believe that a Detective could be 77 and still on the force. There was no retirement pension or Social Security in 1895 after all and his job just requires brains, and not much brawn. Now that I am a senior citizen myself, it's nice to have 50-ish sleuths, (Miss Butterworth), and even older police, as in Detective Gryce, and they are both still pretty sharp. Poirot is no spring chicken, either!

I liked "That Affair Next Door" well enough to get most of the other books in the Detective Gryce series,(two of them are not in versions), at least one of which is another Amelia Butterworth. I also got at least one with Violet Strange, another female sleuth, and a few other titles. has a vast collection of Anna Katharine Green for the full-length books, collections, and short-stories, and many of them are free, or are inexpensive.

I am sorely tempted to start another one right now, but I already interrupted Allen Guelzo's "Gettysburg" over the holiday weekend-that is excellent, by the way-and I'd like to finish it first. I read reviews, and noted which of her books people thought were her best, and which ones they thought were not, and chose accordingly, for starters. I'm going to take my time and enjoy the selections I just downloaded, and if I enjoy them as much, I'll add even more of them.
I enjoy reading about varied cultural time periods. The scene in New York with the morays of earlier times awakened my imagination. The character of Mrs Butterworth is so like what my grandmother would describe about her grandmother that I felt it could have been real. A delightful mystery with an greatest. ending.
As a far-from-young-adult reader, I wasn't sure I'd like this genre at all. Instead, I found myself hardly waiting to get back to reading where I'd left off. The plot was interesting and held my attention. All loose ends were taken care of. I did guess who the'bad guy' was, though, long before I should have so the ending was far from tense. It's not a book I would reread but I don't feel I've wasted my time.
This is a weird story, but great!

All about a bunch of no hopers sent from Heaven to fight for mankind's future in a small town.

The `warriors' are really just an old black blues player, a frustrated Brit business woman, and two kids. But they take over the bodies of the sheriff, his wife, the street cleaner, and a trashy waitress.

Lucid is the son of Satan and comes to the town to claim 66 sets of twins that the people have traded in exchange for their town becoming profitable again after the highway bypasses it.

The story moves between Lucid's slaughter of the child-guardians sent by heaven, and the inept team's attempt to save them.

It is both really scary, moving and very funny in places.

The bit in the mine made my hair stand up.

They run for it into Winterwood and the townsfolk come after them, under Lucid's control. The wood is evil and joins in the attempt to kill the team and all the kids from town.

Honestly, if you want to be scared, amused and entertained then look not further than this great horror story.
His first great success was You Know Me Al, a fictional series of letters from a popular baseball hero to his friend, slyly revealing the letter writer as a crude, conceited, semiliterate, self-deceiving boob. The letters, created while Lardner was writing a sports column for The Chicago Tribune, first appeared in The Saturday Evening Post and were later published in book form in 1918. You Know Me Al reveals Lardner as a satirical master at the peak of his form a fine albeit misanthropic storyteller with a superb feel for the niceties of characters and speech and a sure instinct for provoking laughter.

You Know Me Al Sudoku Puzzle Illustrated 99 Hard Sudoku Puzzles 1 Per Page Ring Lardner 9781547041398 Books

This review refers to the 99¢ Kindle edition. The entire text appears to be there, but there are what seem to have been titles for illustrations sitting around loose, with the illustrations themselves missing. Never mind that, however, what about the book?

There is some clever observation here about human nature that transcends the baseball framework. Jack Keefe, who tells us his story through letters to his friend Al, is an aspiring pitcher starting out in the majors. He would probably be much the same person in any line of work, though, vain about his abilities, blaming his failures on other people or on pure chance, but never on himself, taking full credit for his successes without realizing how others have helped him. He is undisciplined, irresponsible, easily manipulated, and generally clueless. After a couple of near misses with female sports fans, he marries a young woman as irresponsible and unready for married life as himself. Their relationship is rocky, and her demands coupled with his foolishness nearly wreck his career. No doubt they will both mature and work things out, but Lardner never gives in to sentimentality in describing their marriage.

On the positive side, Jack is genuinely talented as a pitcher, and will probably be okay in the long run. He means well, and it's obvious that Al, who never gets to speak for himself, sees something in him worthy of friendship. Jack's devotion to his infant son is touching, although as with everything else in his life, tinged with cluelessness.

Still, apart from the human interest, there is that baseball framework. Well, of course there is. Lardner was a sports writer, writing fiction aimed at baseball fans. He knew the world of professional baseball, at least as it was in his time, and put that knowledge into this book. Unfortunately, at least for a non-fan such as myself, that makes long stretches of this rather short book very tedious. The baseball is inseparable from the story, but for me it was the least interesting part of it. There were lots of smiles here, but also plenty of yawns.

You Know Me Al Sudoku Puzzle Illustrated 99 Hard Sudoku Puzzles 1 Per Page Ring Lardner 9781547041398 Books Reviews

This is a classic. Ring Lardner, in case you don't know, is one of the greats from the Robert Benchley/Dorothy Parker/Alexander Woollcott period. He is worthy of your attention. You should read this one.
This is a must read for baseball fans and especially anyone who is a Chicago White Sox fan. Al is a friend of a pitcher on the team and the book consists of letters written to Al. Written in the early part of the 20th century, the language is not offensive. Many of the situations will make you smile.
Hilarious epistolary novel about a rookie pitcher in the early days of major league baseball. Lardner was a famous baseball reporter until the Black Sox scandal soured him on the game.
Athletes are much more educated & sophisticated today. But especially in baseball there are are still the fun-loving, ignorant, quick to anger, characters. Like Jack, for example. He is just dumb, lacking self awareness but kind of loveable & fun to party with. You'd root for him. What could be better. Talking baseball, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, that cheap owner, Charles Comiskey etc. Listening to the audio version as I drove along, I was smiling. It jogged my own memories of baseball seasons past, even though it is almost 90 years old. This was all before World War I, the Black Sox Scandal & even Babe Ruth.
Light reading of letters written by a baseball player to his buddy. Folksy language makes it an easy read. If you are a fan of old school baseball, you will enjoy the book.
"You Know Me Al" is a glimpse of baseball's distant past, like taking a rattling train back to the days of the pre-WWI game. It is studded with references to actual ballplayers - - Mathewson, Cobb, Crawford, Johnson, Jennings, et al. - - and the storytelling protagonist's arrogant, egotistical reflections on life in the big leagues form a classic of sarcastic wit. Be forewarned, though pitcher Jack Keefe can become pretty frustrating, inasmuch as he always seems to misinterpret the intentions of those around him, lady friends in particular. How good was he on the mound? Well, to hear him tell it . . .
Ring Lardner tells of the humorous trials and tribulations of Jack, a ChiSox pitcher circa 1915 through letters written to his pal Al back home in Bedford, Indiana. Jack has a rather inflated view of himself and his abilities. Today he would be a bonus baby but back then not so much as owners had much greater control. Jack is constantly both outwitted and out maneuvered by Comiskey, his coaches, fellow players and later his wife. Always intending to come home during the off season to spend time with Al & Bertha he never quite makes it. But you know me Al...

Lardner's journalistic style shines as he's able to write short, concise notes by Jack back to Al in an vernacular & idiom suited for ill-educated but well meaning athlete of the day. I've heard claim that Lardner had an ear for speech patterns and it certainly shows with Jack.
In the summer of 2009, award-winning novelist Lawrence Block began contributing a monthly column to Linn’s Stamp News, America’s leading philatelic publication. A collector as a boy and young man, Block had returned to the hobby in the 1990s. Before long he had begun writing about stamps when one of his characters, an assassin-for-hire named Keller, took up philately so he’d have something to do in his impending retirement.

Collectors can probably imagine what became of Keller’s retirement fund; it dwindled even as his collection thrived, and he’s gone on to star in four novels—Hit Man, Hit List, Hit Parade, and Hit & Run—with a fifth, Hit Me, coming from Mulholland Books in 2013.

Block’s column, “Generally Speaking,” quickly became one of Linn’s most popular features. It consists of the reflections and observations of a general worldwide collector—the author, like Keller, collects the whole world during philately’s first century, 1840 to 1940, plus British Empire through the reign of George VI.

The column ranges widely in theme, sometimes dealing with the choices a collector has to make (“Mint or Used?”, “Condition, condition, condition”), sometimes with the day to day tasks one confronts (“Album Bulge and Other Afflictions”, “Buying the Same Stamp Twice”), and often shining the light of philately upon some intriguing social or cultural topic. (“The Philatelic Upside of War” examines the profusion of collectible stamps resulting from the First World War; the philatelic impact of Germany’s hyperinflation of 1923 is assessed in “How Much is That Dachshund in the Fenster?”)

Generally Speaking gathers together the first twenty-five of Block’s columns. If you’ve been reading them in Linn’s, now you can have all the columns at hand in one place. If you’re a collector but haven’t read Lawrence Block before, you’re in for a treat.

And if you’re a fan of the bestselling author’s fiction, but have always regarded a stamp as something to stick on an envelope, here’s your chance to get a little more insight into what keeps Keller hard at work. Even if you don’t rush out to equip yourself with a pair of tongs and a packet of hinges, you’ll have a good time reading about it, and will very likely emerge with a little more respect for what has long been called the King of Hobbies and the Hobby of Kings.

Generally Speaking edition by Lawrence Block Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks

I just recently pulled my stamp albums off the shelf again and re-read several Herman Herst books to rekindle my affection for the hobby. Then I turned to Amazon hoping to find someone from today who was writing lovingly about stamps the way Herst used to write. Fortunately I found this book. I had read Mr. Block's columns in Writer's Digest for many years so was delighted to discover he was writing about stamps. This book is a collection of columns he wrote for Linn's Stamp News and each is a gem.

Another good thing about the book is that it led me to Mr. Block's excellent Hit Man series featuring Keller the stamp collcting hit man.
good
I enjoy this writer's style and humor. It's wonderful to have this collection on my mobile device so I can read them when I'm away from home.
Excellent writer. Entertaining and informative. Who knew stamp collecting (philately) could be so interesting and amusing. I'm interested in reading his novels now.
As a stamp collector, I very much enjoyed Lawrence Block's commentary on the hobby. Highly recommended for fans of Block or collectors.
Speaking as both a dedicated philatelist and a fan of Mr. Block's monthly column in Linn's Stamp News, I was thrilled to discover this eBook and even more thrilled to devour it. Wonderfully written in style, tone, and content, the articles in this compilation are a real pleasure to read. And to be frank, I can't wait to read them again. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the hobby of kings, to anyone who knows a stamp collector and wants to get inside their brain, and most of all, to anyone who enjoys excellent literature.
I have only a passing interest in stamp collecting, but this is a new Lawrence Block book, people, and it's only $2.99 and you don't have to have any prior knowledge of stamps to enjoy it. So click that button for an enjoyable look at Keller's (and Block's) favorite obsession. I guarantee it will keep you entertained and, by the by, give you some insight to what is a consuming hobby for a lot of people. Never hurts to learn something new.
Lawrence Block's stamp-collecting Hit Man (John Keller Mysteries)Keller, has become a hit amongst the philatelic crowd, and with good reason Block not only is a rippingly good writer, but he also has a broad knowledge of stamp collecting and the many things that you can learn from the hobby. His columns in Linn's, collected here, are always enjoyable and full of fascinating background information. Often taking the format of a classroom lecture, with asides and digressions, questions and snide comebacks, these columns are a lot of fun to read and you can't help but learn quite a lot, whether you are a stamp collector or not.
It was bad enough that the prince had to see Freawine’s father making his wild drunken boasts. But he believed them! How long would it be before the dreamy but intimidating prince discovered Freawine couldn't really spin straw into gold—or that this "girl" was really a boy?

Spinning Gold Fresher Fairy Tales #2 edition by C Margery Kempe Literature Fiction eBooks

This is quick read that puts a gender-bending spin on the classic Rumpelstiltskin tale. It ultimately makes for an entertaining read with the added twists of the paranormal and a bit of sensual m/m loving.

With war taking all the young men of their village, a young mother has her son Freawine dress and act as a female to keep him safe. Becoming Frea may keep him safe but it also makes him lonely as he's alienated by everyone in the village for being strange. When his mother dies it's just him and his drunken father with makes him even more alone as his father ignores him for the most part. One drunken and boastful night though has his father putting his life on the line after promising their Prince that Frea can spin hay into gold. It's a scary time as he has to rely on help from a magical dwarf to stay alive. Add in a prince who has secrets of his own and it all heads towards a collision course on their wedding night where Freawine finally ends his loneliness and everyone's secrets are revealed.

For its short word count we get to know Freawine fairly well. He may dress and act like a girl but his feelings and reactions are all man. He's sometimes ashamed of his body's reactions but in the quiet of night he revels in it. The Prince knows about loneliness too and not being able to be himself which makes their pairing believable and points towards a satisfying HEA. Though we don't get to dig too deeply into the Prince's psyche we do know that he'll accept Freawine wholeheartedly and will have him living like a queen with steamy encounters to count on.
Spinning Gold Fresher Fairy Tales #2 edition by C Margery Kempe Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Spinning Gold presents a gender-bending take on the story of Rumpelstiltskin. Like the miller's girl in the original tale, Freawine is the finest in the land at spinning the coarsest wool into the finest thread. Her talents have made her the target of envy, which only helps to further isolate her from the other girls in the village. What truly keeps her one step removed, however, is the fact that `she' is actually a `he'. In order to protect him from being sent off to war, Freawine's mother disguised him as a girl at birth, and taught him to act the part.

When his father's drunken boasting puts him in a dangerous predicament, Freawine must not only worry about doing the impossible (spinning straw into gold), but the improbable (hiding his true gender from the Prince) as well. As in the original story, a magical little man appears to help make the impossible possible. The price he demands for each night labour is greater than the night before, until he demands the impossible - the first child born of Freawine's union with the Prince - and the young spinner agrees.

Just how the story twists from there is a delight I'll leave you to discover for yourself. It's not quite what you would expect, but it is so entirely satisfying.

A fairy tale with a very happy ending, this is a story that's sweet, funny, and tastefully erotic. When all is said and done, it's the kind of story that just makes you smile in delight.
A M/M take on the classic Rumplestiltskin with a twist, this retold fairy tale had everything it needed to be convincing. Freawine is a peasant boy who had a mother so fearful of losing her only son to the wars that she dressed him and raised him as a female. Mother has passed but Freawine must still “be” a girl, since that is how the villagers know him. Unfortunately, because he can’t bath with the others or do anything that might show his true body, the village girls consider him above himself and he’s pretty lonely. He has talent with the thread but he certainly can’t spin straw into gold, which is what his drunken father boasts one night at the tavern. Since the dour, grim Prince hears it and wants that gold, what is a Freawine to do?
For his part, the Prince has reasons and secrets of his own, but with threats and lock down, he commands Freawine to produce the gold. I absolutely loved when Freawine willingly laughs and commits to the promise extracted by the ugly little man. Excellent!
This poetry book was designed with the intent to uplift and encourage your hearts. This book includes poems that deal with mankind's thoughts, struggles and triumphs. The book also entails scriptural references that help encourage mankind into looking to God for total deliverance and freedom in this journey we call life. God can set you free from negative thoughts, fear, and so much more. "Just a walk with God" represents a journey with the Lord. The title caused me to think about how our lives can be transformed just by walking with God. The metaphorical nature of the book makes it great for self-reflection and for reading to loved ones. Thank you all for your support. God really loves you, and remember, He has a plan for your life!

JUST A WALK WITH GOD edition by DEE WASHINGTON SelfHelp eBooks

Howard Pyle Book of Pirates Howard Pyle 9781117511573 Books Reviews

This is the book! Gathering books from my and my parents' childhoods. This was a favorite, Pyle's illustrations are terrific especially since we had just seen an exhibit of his works in Chadd's Ford, PA.
Howard Pyle is the best writer of all! He creates a mood like no other author can!
Exactly as ordered and fun to read!
I loved this book when I was 6, and now I have my own copy. Hurrah!
Great historical Pirate tales, with insightful history. Description did not indicate any language except English, and by golly.. it IS in English!
It was in far better condition than I expected and will be a great addition to the Hemingway Pfeiffer museum in Piggott, Arkansas. This is the book that Ernest Hemingway loved to read to his son John Hemingway while they were staying at his wife's parent's house in Piggott between 1928 and 1940.
Howard Pyle wrote AND illustrated Book of Pirates. This edition had no illustrations and it was returned for a refund
The Good Guy meets the Beautiful Girl, and with the help of the Faithful Servant, they overcome Bad Guys and Not So Bad Guys. Victorian potboiler, and characterization was not his strong point. But the plot rolls along quite nicely, and there's some chilling descriptions of the French Revolution. Made me look up some history, and was a pleasant way to while away an evening.
